In this post, we will share some advice to make your photoshoot better. So, here we go. So, here we go.

Please note these are suggestions.

Know your Landscape

Knowing where you are going to be photographed is important. Not because of the place, but because of the background colours. As a rule of thumb, try to avoid any colour that predominates in your background. For example:

  • Don't wear green if your photos are in a park with green grass.
  • Don't wear white if you are being photographed in the snow.
  • Don't wear orange or red if it is Fall weather with red leaves trees.

Outfit Colour

The colour of your outfit is suggested by following the complementary colours. Wearing complementary colours makes the subject of the photos naturally stand out.

complementary coloursNow that you know what not to do, let's see what you should do. The best photos are those with colour contrast. Colour contrast is given by the predominant colour of your background.

Following the logic of the colour graphic:

  • If you have a river behind (blue mostly), orange is the preferable colour to wear.
  • If you are in a park or the forest (green mostly), red, orange and purple are the colours to go to.
  • If it is Autumn (red hues mostly), green and blue are the colours to wear.

What about the snow? We mostly believe snow is white, well it is. However, snow reflects the colour, if you are observant, it could have a blue hue or a yellow one. Snow in the mornings or on a cloudy day is mostly blue, therefore warm colours such as orange, red and purple are recommended. If your photos are during the golden hour, the snow will reflect a pale yellow tone from the sky; cool colours such as purple, blue and green are suggested.

Your skin tone is also important. And it has to do with the tone of the colour you are wearing. If you are pale, wear a dark or oversaturated colour. If your skin colour is dark, wearing light colours is the right move.

Sometimes people like to wear shiny shirts. Please try to avoid this as much as possible and go for matte colours. Shiny shirts (like some accessories, read below) clip the camera sensors very easily and you may end up having a white spot with no details.

What about Accessories?

All females love accessories! But not all accessories work in a photo. Here are some things you need to know:

  • Unless you are modelling eyewear, no shades at all! Shades not only hide eyes, but they create an unnecessary glare that is not appealing to the photo.
  • Shiny accessories such as necklaces, earrings, or bracelets should be kept to a minimum especially if you are under a bright light.
  • Any kind of hat that casts a shadow on your eyes should be avoided as well.

Group Photos?

If you can, it is always nice to coordinate colours with all the people. This looks fantastic if you are in a family photo. You don't have to wear a uniform, that is the last thing you want. By wearing a predominant colour, each member of your group can keep their individuality while being a member of the group.
